Video tips for Zoom calls

Updated: Sep 13, 2022

Video conferencing and video calls have been around a long time, but – due to current global circumstances – many may just now be starting to use them. Here are a few quick tips to make sure you are professionally seen and heard (also a helpful for all the virtual happy hours):

1. Elevate your device so the camera is level with your eyes. Use books or other sturdy items under the device so you are looking straight into the camera lens.

2. Framing is also important. Make sure you are a sufficient distance from the camera so everyone can see your head, neck and some of your shoulders. Don’t get so close that people only see your face. You should be the focal point of the frame and not your environment. Too much ceiling, tilt the camera down or elevate it more.

3. Location, location, location. Don’t sit in front of a window or in a noisy area. Light sources like windows should be in front of you to illuminate your face. If the light is too strong, consider closing curtains or blinds to soften it, but don’t get rid of it. A lamp can also cause some strange shadows, so be aware. A noisy area may dominate over your voice. Many consumer microphones (even headsets and earbuds) are made to elevate background noises. You want this when you’re recording that ‘happy birthday’ song (when you’re washing your hands - hint, hint, nudge, nudge), but for a group video call this can be too much. A quiet, smaller area is better. Try to not do anything else while on the call that causes too noise. (side note: I've been guilty of this! Thankfully it wasn't a business call)

4. Test your camera and microphone. Most programs allow you to test both the camera and the microphone. Take the time to test everything before you go live. If you can see up your nose, then see tip #1 & #2. If the levels on your microphone are too low, no one will hear your great idea.

5. Use headsets if possible. I’ve found these tend to have better sound than whatever is built in on your device (especially computers).

6. Phones are good to use. Most phones have a great camera and if you use a headset/earbuds with a microphone, you’ll be all set. However, please prop it up, don't hold it (you’ll make people dizzy) and set it horizontally not vertically. Additionally, please see the framing note to make sure we see more than your eye or top of your head.

7. Don’t forget to change out of your PJs, unless it’s a virtual pajama party, then… have fun!
